Ingredients

4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apples: Core and slice the apples into thin wedges. Place them in a large mixing bowl.

Add Flavor: Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Drizzle with vanilla extract, and toss gently to coat the apple slices evenly.

Make the Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, rolled oats, and all-purpose flour. Pour in the melted butter and mix until the topping is crumbly. If you are using walnuts, fold them into the mixture as well.

Assemble the Dish: Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish. Arrange the seasoned apple slices evenly in the bottom of the dish. Spread the oat mixture over the apples, ensuring they are well covered.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
