Ingredients

6 cups of day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 cups of peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Powdered sugar, for dusting

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Prepare the Bread: In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If you're using raisins, add them now as well. Toss everything together to ensure even distribution.

Make the Custard Mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined and smooth.

Combine Ingredients: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples. Gently fold everything together until the bread is well absorbed and coated. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Add Sweetness: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and melted butter. Drizzle this mixture over the top of the bread pudding for added sweetness and caramelization.

Bake: Pour the bread pudding mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the bread pudding from the oven and let it cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving. Slice into squares and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
