Ingredients

12 ounces ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix)

1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

½ cup fresh basil, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add ziti pasta and cook until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce. Stir in the ricotta cheese until well mixed.

Layer the Dish: In a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture evenly. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese and one-third of the Parmesan cheese over the top. Add the remaining ziti mixture and top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped basil, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
