2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup whole milk, warmed

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 large egg

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup cooked breakfast sausage, crumbled

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/4 cup chopped fresh chives (optional)

1/4 tsp garlic powder

1/4 tsp black pepper

1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions
 

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

    Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.

      Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk the melted butter and egg together. Stir the yeast mixture into this bowl.

        Form the Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until it forms a soft dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour until manageable.

          Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

            First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

              Prepare Filling: In a bowl, mix together the crumbled sausage, cheddar cheese, chives (if using), garlic powder, and black pepper.

                Shape the Rolls: Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick. Spread the filling evenly over the dough, then roll it tightly into a log.

                  Cut the Rolls: Slice the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.

                    Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes, until puffed up.

                      Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

                        Egg Wash: Beat the additional egg for egg wash and brush the top of each roll.

                          Bake: Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

                            Cool and Serve: Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm.
