Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.

    Prepare the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.

        - Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix until just combined and no dry streaks remain. The batter will be thick. Set aside.

          Prepare the Cookie Layer:

            - In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.

              - Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

                - In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix until just incorporated. Fold in the chocolate chips.

                  Layering the Mixtures:

                    - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.

                      - Drop spoonfuls of the cookie dough evenly over the brownie batter. You can gently spread it out with a spatula, but it's okay if some brownie batter shows through.

                        Bake the Brownies:

                          - Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (a bit of gooeyness is fine for that fudgy texture).

                            Cooling and Serving:

                              - Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes. For cleaner cuts, allow to cool completely before slicing into squares.

                                - Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or just as they are - perfect with a glass of milk!
