Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

6 cups of Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6-8 medium apples)

1/4 cup maple syrup

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the Crisp Topping:

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Prepare the Apple Filling:

      - In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, maple syrup, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Mix well to coat the apples evenly.

        - Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish or a large oven-safe skillet, spreading it evenly.

          Make the Crisp Topping:

            - In another mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

              - Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

                - If using, fold in the chopped nuts for added crunch and flavor.

                  Assemble the Crisp:

                    - Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the apple filling in the baking dish, covering the apples completely.

                      Bake:

                        - Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

                          Cool and Serve:

                            - Once baked, remove the crisp from the oven and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. This will help set the juices.

                              - Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an indulgent finish.
