Ingredients

14 oz firm tofu, pressed and drained

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated

2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (for vegan option)

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)

2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Fresh cilantro (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Start by cutting the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1-inch pieces. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

Coat the Tofu: Place the tofu cubes in a large bowl and sprinkle with cornstarch. Gently toss the cubes until they are evenly coated.

Fry the Tofu: Heat vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the tofu cubes in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove the tofu from the skillet and transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Make the Garlic Butter Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the butter. Once melted, add the minced garlic and grated ginger. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

Add Seasoning: Stir in the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey (or maple syrup), and red pepper flakes. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2-3 minutes, letting the flavors meld.

Combine Tofu and Sauce: Return the crispy tofu back to the skillet, gently tossing it in the garlic butter sauce until all the pieces are well-coated. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to absorb the flavors.

Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and transfer the garlic butter tofu bites to a serving dish. Garnish with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and fresh cilantro if desired.

Enjoy: Serve these delicious crispy garlic butter tofu bites as an appetizer, or with steamed rice and vegetables for a satisfying main dish!
