Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed

6 slices of ham (thinly sliced)

6 slices of cheese (Swiss or Gruyère work well)

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

½ teaspoon black pepper

¼ teaspoon smoked paprika

Fresh chives (for garnish, optional)

Flour (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the sheet of puff pastry to smooth out creases. Cut it into 12 equal squares (3x3 inches each).

Egg Wash Preparation: In a small bowl, beat the egg to create an egg wash. Set aside.

        Layering the Ingredients:

          - Place 6 pastry squares on the baking sheet.

            - Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each square.

              - Layer one slice of ham followed by one slice of cheese on top of each mustard-covered square.

                - Sprinkle black pepper and smoked paprika evenly over the cheese.

Stacking: Top each of the 6 squares with another puff pastry square, sealing the edges gently by pressing down with a fork to create a decorative border. Brush the tops with the egg wash.

Baking: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed up, and the cheese is melted.

Serving: Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. If desired, sprinkle chopped fresh chives on top for added flavor and garnish.

Enjoy: Serve warm as a delightful appetizer, snack, or light meal.
