When preparing your crunchy garlic butter croutons, one of the most essential steps is ensuring that the croutons are spread out in a single layer on the baking sheet. This simple yet critical technique allows for even heat distribution, preventing any soggy or undercooked pieces. When croutons are piled on top of one another, moisture gets trapped, leading to uneven cooking. A single layer maximizes the exposure to heat, allowing each piece to become beautifully golden brown and crisp.

Ingredients

4 cups of day-old bread (French or Italian), cubed

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried parsley)

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for a kick)

Instructions

Preheat your oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the bread: In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread with the melted butter, making sure the cubes are well-coated.

Add garlic and seasonings: Stir in the minced garlic, chopped parsley, Italian seasoning (if using), salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix until all bread pieces are evenly coated with the garlic butter mixture.

Spread on a baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Evenly spread the coated bread cubes in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Bake the croutons: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, tossing halfway through, until the croutons are golden brown and crunchy. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning!

Cool and store: Remove from the oven and let the croutons cool completely on the baking sheet. Once cooled, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
