Go Back
The history of lasagna dates back centuries, with roots that can be traced to Ancient Greece. The Greeks had a dish called "Laganon," made of layers of pasta and sauce, which laid the groundwork for the lasagna we know today. However, it wasn't until the dish made its way to Italy that it evolved into the layered delight we adore. In the Italian tradition, lasagna was often made with sheets of pasta, cheese, and meat, reflecting the regional ingredients and cooking styles of the time.

Ingredients

9 lasagna noodles

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

24 oz marinara sauce

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Noodles: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage and cook until browned. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent. Stir in the marinara sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.

Mix Ricotta Filling: In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth and evenly combined.

Assemble Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, start by spreading a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, one-third of the mozzarella cheese, and one-third of the remaining meat sauce. Repeat the layers (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, meat sauce) until all ingredients are used, finishing with a final layer of meat sauce topped with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray foil with cooking spray) and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Slice and serve hot!
