Ingredients

6 cups Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)

1 package (14 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade if preferred)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 tablespoon coarse sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice. Then, add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Mix until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for about 15-20 minutes to allow the juices to develop.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Prepare the Pie Crust: Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim any excess that hangs over the edges.

Fill the Pie: Pour the apple mixture into the crust, making sure to spread it evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter on top.

Top the Pie: Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. You can either cut slits for a lattice design or simply cover it whole. Trim and crimp the edges to seal the pie.

Egg Wash: Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg to give it a beautiful golden color. Sprinkle coarse sugar over the top for extra crunch and sweetness.

Bake the Pie: Place the pie on the middle rack of the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is a deep golden brown and the filling is bubbling. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.

Cool and Serve: Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing. This helps the filling set. Serve warm or at room temperature, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
