Ingredients

6 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (preferably a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (for topping)

½ cup old-fashioned oats

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup milk

½ cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Optional: vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of flour, and vanilla extract. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

In another bowl, mix together the 1 ½ cups flour, oats, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg.

Stir in the melted butter and milk until just combined. The batter will be somewhat thick but pourable.

Spoon the batter over the apple mixture in the baking dish, spreading it out as evenly as possible. It’s okay if some of the apples are sticking out.

For an extra touch, sprinkle the brown sugar on top of the batter for a caramelized effect once baked.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
