Ingredients

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

4 large egg yolks

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 box of graham crackers (about 14 crackers)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Fresh berries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Custard Base: In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk everything together until smooth and well combined.

Cook the Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 6-8 minutes.

Add Yolks and Flavor: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolks. Gradually whisk a small amount of the hot cream mixture into the yolks to temper them. Then add the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan, stirring well.

Finalize Custard: Continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes until the custard is thick and creamy. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully incorporated.

Cool the Custard: Transfer the custard to a bowl and cover the surface with plastic wrap to prevent a film from forming. Let it cool to room temperature before refrigerating for at least 2 hours.

Assemble the Cream Squares: Once the custard is chilled, line a 9x9 inch square baking dish with parchment paper. Create a layer of graham crackers at the bottom of the dish, breaking them as necessary to fit.

Layer Custard: Spread half of the cooled custard over the graham crackers evenly. Add another layer of graham crackers on top of the custard, followed by the remaining custard.

Final Layer: Add a final layer of graham crackers, pressing down gently. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.

Serve: After chilling, remove the squares from the baking dish using the parchment paper. Dust the top with powdered sugar and cut into squares. Serve with fresh berries on top if desired!

Prep Time: 30 minutes | Total Time: 6 hours (including chilling) | Servings: 9 squares
