Ingredients

4 cups pear juice (preferably fresh-pressed)

1 cup apple cider

1 medium pear, sliced (for garnish)

1 orange, zested and sliced

1 stick of cinnamon

4 whole cloves

3 star anise

1/2 teaspoon allspice berries

1 tablespoon brown sugar (adjust to taste)

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated, if possible)

1 pinch of sea salt

Optional: 1/4 cup spiced rum or bourbon (for an adult version)

Instructions

In a large saucepan or pot, combine the pear juice and apple cider over medium heat.

Add the sliced pear, orange zest, and orange slices into the pot with the juices.

Stir in the cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, allspice berries, brown sugar, nutmeg, and sea salt.

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Do not let it come to a boil—this will preserve the fresh flavor of the juices.

Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and allow to steep for about 15-20 minutes. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary.

If you're adding spiced rum or bourbon, stir it in during the last 5 minutes of simmering.

Remove from heat and strain the cider through a fine mesh sieve to remove all spices and fruit bits.

Pour the warm spiced pear cider into mugs, garnish with additional sliced pear and orange as desired, and serve immediately.
